    Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Yirrganydji and Djabugay peoples, as the traditional owners of this land and pay respect to their elders, past, present, and emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal Australia who educated their children in this area.  We show respect for their history, their culture, and our shared future.

We will always remember that under the concrete, steel and asphalt of this College, this land is, was, and always will be traditional Aboriginal land.

    Prayer for Pentecost

Holy Spirit, we thank you for your gift of life and grace.
Fill our hearts with your presence and guide our thoughts and actions.
May your wisdom illuminate our paths and your power empower us to serve you faithfully.
We ask that you work within us, transforming us into your image, and using us to spread your love and peace.

    Amen.

    From the Principal

Dear Families of Newman Catholic College

Recently we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, and now we look forward to the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. The same Holy Spirit who filled the apostles on Pentecost continues to act in our lives. Imagine ourselves in the midst of the Upper Room, where Jesus himself gives us his body and blood, where the Holy Spirit himself comes down and showers us with all his many gifts. If we wish to leave this Upper Room and carry out our mission as the apostles of our own day, let us ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with the same incredible passion, genuine love and great courage, that we might bring the Gospel out to our world, community and school.

We pray that our College continues to be a vibrant community of faith and community of learners. We have so much to celebrate; in the last week alone, we experienced the Year 10 Retreat a very spiritual and moving experience. Here the Year 10s had the opportunity to look at their way forward into senior years and the crossroad decisions they need to make. They acknowledged the need for the Spirit of courage and commitment to work in their lives. It was an absolutely beautiful experience and I was blessed to share this time with them.

Catholic Schools are not private schools. As Catholic Schools they are commissioned to:

    • be places of authentic evangelisation where faith and life are one.
    • celebrate God’s abundant and abiding presence in all creation.
    • be communities sustained by life giving relationships.
    • be welcoming to all who seek to share their life.
    • be centres of vital holistic learning.
    • be places of self-renewal and sowers of change.
    • build constructive covenants with all partners.

I would like to thank you in advance for your involvement in the many activities planned for the remainder of this term and year. Like most schools around Queensland, we have experienced some difficulty at times filling some positions with people suitable for our College. I thank you for welcoming our new teachers and support officers and we are certainly blessed to have a full quota of staff lined up for Semester 2. Remember Mother Teresa’s quote: “Always do small things with great love”.

During Week 8, 9 and 10, I will be taking some Professional and Long Service Leave and visiting feeder schools and families in the Torres Strait. During this time Mr Wilbur Donovan will be Acting Principal.  Please support him in this acting role.

Please mark into your diaries the 9th June 6:30pm the F@N AGM.

Thank you for your kind donations to CARITAS this year.  If anyone has any final donations, please send these to the College Office. We will present the cheque to Fr Dariusz during the final assembly to be held on Thursday 26 June at 11:00am.

    Please enjoy the following story.

    The Inheritance

Two old friends bumped into one another on the street one-day.  One man looked very sad and discouraged, almost on the verge of tears.  His friend asked, “What has the world done to you, my old friend?”

The sad fellow said, “three weeks ago, a rich uncle of mine died.  To my surprise, he included me in his will.  His lawyers sent me a cheque for $40,000!”

“That’s terrific,” said the friend.  “That’s a lot of money.”

“Yes, but two weeks ago, they sent me another cheque – this time for $100,000!”

“Wow, that’s incredible!” said the friend.  “You’ve really been blessed!”

“You don’t understand,” the man whined.  “Last week I got another cheque in the mail that was larger than the first two.  It was for a quarter of a million dollars!”

The friend was getting very confused.  “You’re right, I don’t understand. Why then are you so unhappy?  Why do you look so glum?”

“Because this week I haven’t received anything.”  Came the reply.

Sometimes we are so blessed that we begin to think we’re entitled to all the good things that come our way.  Perhaps it’s human nature.  If you give a small child a gift, he/she will treasure it.  But if you give two gifts, he/she might wonder why he/she didn’t get a third.

None of us deserves the things we have. Most of us live very comfortably while people all over the world suffer in extreme poverty. Often, we take for granted things that other people have never experienced. And sometimes we still feel like we don’t have enough.

That’s why it’s important for us all to practice gratitude.  We all need to take time every day to thank God for the blessings he has given us at Newman and in our lives. I suppose when we are thankful for what we have, we will be able to live every day with joy – whether we get more or not.

May God richly bless you as you continue to share in the partnership of building Newman Catholic College and our Community.

    With Every Blessing

    First Nations Mabo Day Excursion

On Tuesday 3 June, our First Nation students attended an excursion to Hartley's Crocodile Farm as part of Reconciliation week and in recognition of Mabo Day.

It was an opportunity for all students to bond and strengthen relationships with each other on country. From a boat ride on Hartley's lagoon, learning about the importance of melaleuca wetlands, watching the crocodile's hunting skills, and how to avoid a croc attack, a croc feeding show to the Gondwana gateway with cute koala's and kangaroos.  We all enjoyed a lovely lunch on the crocodile viewing deck with some interactive presentations and a meet & greet with some local residents.

Shout out to Yirrganydji Traditional owners, Aunty Mercy, Shannon and Jeanette for joining us.

Year 8 Participants in Crankworx Cairns 2025

From Wednesday 21 to Sunday 25 May, Crankworx Cairns lit up the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park with adrenaline-fueled action and world-class competition. Among the elite riders were several of our very own students, proudly representing our College on an international stage.

Tyreek showed incredible determination and skill across multiple events. In the Dual Slalom, Tyreek qualified strongly but unfortunately crashed in the finals. During Downhill, he was riding well in practice and had a solid run going in , but a slip in the Generator section resulted in a crash late in the course. He also competed in the Pump Track, showing speed and control throughout the event.

Seth impressed with his participation in four disciplines: Downhill, Pump Track, Enduro, and Dual Slalom. His commitment and versatility were evident as he tackled a demanding schedule and raced alongside some of the best in the sport.

Coen represented our College in both Downhill and Dual Slalom, riding with focus, power, and determination on some of the most challenging terrain Crankworx had to offer.

    Coen

    Coen

We are incredibly proud of Tyreek, Seth, and Coen for their courage, sportsmanship, and effort. Competing at Crankworx is a major achievement, and these students have represented our community with distinction. Well done!

    Year 10

Last week, our Year 10 cohort had the opportunity to attend a retreat at the beautiful Genazzano Conference Centre near Yungaburra. We were blessed by perfect weather conditions and joined by a team of dedicated staff. Students were invited to explore their faith in the context of our theme: Crossroads and Connections. This theme extends beyond our retreat program and into the student’s decision-making processes as they devise their plans for the senior phase of schooling. It was wonderful to engage with students outside of the classroom and continue getting to know them on a personal level. As well as the structured sessions, students were able to strengthen friendships through the open activities such as swimming, fishing, playing sport, playing games and enjoying each other’s company by the lake. We celebrated Mass together and took part in epic trivia battles. We finished the retreat by ‘filling the buckets’ of our peers and making commitments to pursue on our return to the world of Newman Catholic College.

Our next major year level event is the Year 10 Dinner on July 17 at Palm Cove Surf Club. Information and booking details have been sent out via a parent slip. Please complete this and purchase tickets as soon as possible to secure your spot.

As we approach assessment time, students are reminded to be on top of their time management and organisation. Students who fail to submit assessment on the required date may need to attend lunchtime or afterschool detentions until their work is complete. This is intended to prepare students for Year 11 and 12 where non submission of assessment can have disastrous consequences for their overall results.

Year 10 Retreat: Cross Roads and Connection

Last week, our Year 10 students took part in their spiritual retreat at the Genazzano Retreat Centre, under the theme Crossroads & Connections. Across two groups, students engaged in three days of reflection, team-building, prayer, and personal growth.

The retreat invited students to explore who they are becoming as they prepare for their senior years. Sessions included topics like decision-making, overcoming fear, discovering God’s presence in life’s turning points, and building meaningful relationships. Students reflected on personal “crossroads” through journaling and scripture, participated in a moving Reconciliation Liturgy, and celebrated Mass together in a spirit of Wisdom, Compassion, Courage, Truth and Unity.

Highlights included the “Poverty Game” simulation, creative vision boards, and the powerful Uluru Rainstorm meditation on Psalm 139.  Special thanks goes out to all staff who volunteered their time and expertise in leading and presenting the many sessions and guiding our students through such a transformative and memorable experience - Mr Tim Chapman, Mr Ben Klein, Mr Stephen Godfrey, Mr Mick Ellison, Ms Elena Bozzo, Ms Kate Lynam, Ms Emma Zell, Mr Alex Starmer, Mr Zane Dockray, Ms Kameli Williams, Ms Sara Schiavon, Mr Matt Kirby, Mr Jason O'Brien, Ms Mitzi Bird and Dr Lauretta Graham. Special thanks should also go to the Genazzano Retreat Centre Staff for their warm hospitality.

    Science Matters

    Mr Carl Johnson
    Science Teacher

The Year 9 Earth and Environmental Science field trip to Trinity Beach offered students a hands-on opportunity to investigate local geological features and processes in a real-world setting. Students engaged in practical observation, sketching, sampling, and analysis. At the granite outcrop, they identified minerals such as quartz and feldspar and discussed why granite forms prominent landforms. The seawall rocks provided a diverse selection of rock types, allowing students to compare grain size, colour, and texture, and practise rock classification skills. Further along the beach, they examined quartz veins in granite and applied the principle of cross-cutting relationships to determine the relative age of geological features.

Throughout the trip, students were encouraged to sketch, photograph, and describe what they observed, applying fieldwork techniques and mineral identification skills. The excursion concluded with reflective questions prompting students to consider the significance of local geology, its impact on the environment, and what further questions they might explore. This immersive experience not only deepened their geological understanding but also built essential scientific skills in observation, interpretation, and communication. Thank you to Mr Radburnd and Ms Lopez for helping out on the day.

Newman Catholic College fight on at FUSE eSports Cup!

A team of four talented students from Newman Catholic College recently showcased their skills at the thrilling FUSE eSports Cup for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at Woree State High School. The team, consisting of Javvy S, Eli H, Daniel S and Oliver K, travelled to Woree State High School to face off against 22 fierce competitors from Woree State High, Cairns State High and Trinity Bay High Schools.

The day kicked off with an enlightening presentation on the health and safety of eSport athletes, covering essential topics like diet, exercises and stretches to keep players in peak condition. The excitement ramped up as the first round began, with each player battling three opponents to earn points and secure a spot in the Knockout Finals.

As part of the FUSE Cup commitment to student digital safety, all students actively engaged in discussions about cyberbullying and its effects on a person’s wellbeing during the break between rounds. Each student left the presentation with valuable insights into dealing with cyberbullying and the support that is available for them.

In a display of skill and determination, Javvy and Oliver from Newman Catholic College advanced to the Knockout Finals, where they fought valiantly in nail-biting matches. Although they were ultimately edged out in close contests, their performance was nothing short of inspiring.

The rest of the Newman team gained invaluable experience by observing high-level competitive play, learning strategies and techniques from the best. The tournament concluded with a standout performance from a Trinity Bay High School student, who emerged victorious and earned an invitation to the State finals in November.

Although none of the Newman team made it to the finals, we didn’t come back empty handed. Eli Harris was awarded an Honourable Mention for his growth and sportsmanship throughout the day. Eli walked away with a FUSE cup branded cap for his efforts.

A huge thank you to Kristen Cummins of FUSE Cup for organising the tournament and Woree State High School for hosting. A thank you to Dr Lauretta Graham and Kim Auld for supporting the eSport @ Newman throughout this year.

This inaugural Super Smash Bros. tournament has ignited a passion within the eSports community at Newman Catholic College. The team is more motivated than ever to continue their training and come back stronger for next year's FUSE Cup. Go Newman!

On Wednesday 21 May, we were delighted to host students from Josho Gakuen Junior High School in Japan for a special one-day visit to our College. Their arrival beautifully aligned with our Year 7 Global Citizen Day, creating a perfect setting for cultural exchange and new friendships.

Our Year 7 students partnered with their Japanese buddies for a vibrant day filled with activities such as Zumba, volleyball, table tennis, origami, calligraphy, and cultural quizzes. Despite the language barrier, there was no shortage of smiles, laughter, and shared experiences.

It was a truly heartwarming reminder of the power of connection and the joy that comes from embracing our place in a global community.

With assessment time approaching, our students will soon be busy preparing for their exams and projects. The Year 7 groups will either record self-introductions or create slideshows about themselves in their target languages. If they wish, their work may be sent to a buddy overseas to spark a potential long-term friendship. The higher year level language students will be furthering their knowledge and understanding about the languages they are learning through meaningful assessment items.

Our Year 8 OED class recently completed a three day camp at Lake Tinaroo - Camp Barrabadeen, where students engaged in navigation and orienteering on foot and in canoes. Students have been studying navigation skills and were put to the test with two, three hour navigation activities. Students also enjoyed a hike through Torpedo Bay overlooking the Tinaroo Dam wall. Our camp oven cooking experience was also a success with the bread baked quite well. Students were also successful with a pancake challenge cooked in trangias for breakfast! The trip ended with a stop into the Emerald Creek Ice Creamery for a well deserved treat. Well done students for your great attitude and behaviour. Special thanks to Mrs Kylie Williams and Mr McMahon who supported Mr Dockray's class with this camp.

Celebrating Parent Day 2025: Honouring the Heart of Every Family

This year, we were thrilled to celebrate Parent Day 2025  (1/6/2025)- a special opportunity to acknowledge the vital role parents and carers play in shaping the lives of children and young people.

According to the Raising Children Network, strong, positive relationships between parents and children are key to healthy development. From building resilience and emotional regulation, to supporting academic success and social skills, the everyday interactions between parents and children make a lasting difference.

Parenting is both rewarding and challenging. There’s no single ‘right way’ to parent, and every family has its own unique story. What matters most is creating a warm, responsive environment where children feel safe, supported, and deeply connected. As the Raising Children Network notes, “Children do best when they have secure and loving relationships with the adults who care for them.”

At school, we see the impact of your care every day - in the way your children approach their learning, friendships, and challenges. Parent Day is not just a celebration; it’s a thank you for the endless cups of tea, the early morning drop-offs, the homework help, the listening ears, and the quiet encouragement behind the scenes.

Whether you're a parent, grandparent, guardian, or carer - your love and guidance are at the heart of everything we do here at Newman College. Happy Parent Day!

For more resources on parenting and child development, visit raisingchildren.net.au.

    Stop Drop and Go Zone

    Stop Drop Go Zone

Kinetic runs the public bus services in Cairns and they travel through the JCU bus interchange regularly throughout the day.

Drivers have reported safety issues as parents are dropping off/picking up children from Newman Catholic College.

The area around the end roundabout is marked with no standing signs however cars are often stopping in this area which impacts on the safe passage of buses.

Parents are also reminded not to queue around the roundabout when accessing the Stop Drop Go Zone.

We are kindly asking the families to use the designated Stop Drop Go Zone to ensure the public buses and other road uses are not inconvenienced.

Note: If a caregiver has access to the app, they will not have access to Parent Slips unless they are a legal guardian.

Some of the most useful features include:

    • College contact and directory information.
    • Notification of student absences.
    • Links to Parent Slips and Parent Teacher Online.
    • Student timetables.
    • Access to your students’ academic reports.
    • The ability to add College calendar events to your personal calendar.
