Gabriel De Guzman- Assistant Principal Junior Secondary (7-10)
It is a privilege to join the Newman Catholic College community as Assistant Principal – Junior School (Years 7-10). I approach this role with a deep sense of gratitude, excitement, and commitment to fostering an environment where students feel valued, respected, and inspired to grow in all areas of their lives.
In my years as a teacher and educational leader, I have always believed that schools hold a unique responsibility in shaping the whole person—spiritually, academically, and personally. It is through nurturing each student's individual growth that we empower them to become curious learners, compassionate advocates, and confident, authentic individuals.
Together with the Newman Catholic College staff whom I have the privilege of working alongside, I am committed to creating a space where all members of our community feel connected, supported, and inspired to contribute to the greater good. Together, we aim to cultivate an environment where respect, excellence, and compassion guide us in our shared mission to help each young person thrive.

I’m excited to be joining the Leadership Team at Newman College as Business Manager for Term 1.
I come from St Andrews, where I’ve worked for the past 4 years and I bring over 30 years of experience in a variety of Finance Management and administration positions. This includes significant experience working in CFO roles in the Government sector (QLD and NSW) as well as 4 years working as a Finance Consultant for an IT company. I was born in Cairns, studied at JCU and have professional qualifications in Accounting (including CPA) and Management
While a significant focus of my role is on managing the finances of the College (including budgets and fee billing), my role crosses over many areas including facilities management. No two days are the same at Newman and I have found that all the staff are extremely skilled and flexible and focused on achieving the best possible outcomes for the students.
I find working in the school environment is incredibly rewarding, as it offers the opportunity to play a part in shaping the education and future of our young people.
From the short time I’ve been here at Newman College, I’ve already been struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere, the dedication of the staff, and the strong sense of community. It’s clear to me that the staff share in the vision and values of the College, are on target and fully committed to achieving its strategic goals. I’m looking forward to being part of this wonderful College for the term ahead.
Thank you to everyone who has made me feel so welcome. I’m excited and blessed to have the opportunity to contribute to the success of Newman College. I look forward to getting to know the community during my time here.

In Australia – where I became a full-time mum – I worked as a freelance Graphic Designer, a Photographer, and an Art Instructor. Later, became a Visual Art teacher, I started my career in North-West Queensland.
I have always wanted to share my passion for visual arts with others; to help them discover their potential and acquire skills to express their ideas. Nowadays, my main expressive medium is acrylic painting. I am active member of PAEA Association for FNQ Art Educators. Heart Speaks to Heart. Paddling the canoe of professional teacher and parenthood binds my heart to the Newman belief that every person has a unique purpose, irreplaceable, reflecting the image of God, fulfilling God's purpose of becoming family, serving and loving one another with all our hearts and minds in our community, faith and reason working in unity.
Happily married to a wonderful husband, with three children, teaching experience overseas and in Aotearoa New Zealand, and an MA in Literature, I am very excited about our new adventure in Australia. It is an honour to acknowledge Country, elders past, present and emerging, and to weave our shared commitment to Country and growing faith into the lives of the children. I am equally excited about growing a community garden of herbs, orchids, hibiscus, edible flowers, medicinal plants, and whatever the children dream of sowing and growing as part of a Group Project to cultivate growing together and serving the community. Enjoying the wonders of God's creation can be an exciting way to learn about the stages of our own growth, patience, and celebrate the miracle of life.
From Te Ika a Maui (Maui's fish: the North Island of New Zealand), I greatly enjoy meeting and working with people from all over the world, exploring common values and learning about cultural differences that enrich our lives. Thank you for the privilege of being part of the Newman Catholic College family.

Hello all, I am very excited to be a part of Newman Catholic College community. I have had a break from teaching for the past two years, using my Social Work Degree in various roles, both in Cairns and New South Wales.
Student, family and teacher wellbeing is an important part of my ethos and I am committed to building positive and supportive relationships with the students in my classes and the wider College community.
My informal teaching background began as a volunteer mum for many years in both primary and secondary schools with my 6 children. I then moved into the role of teacher aide in an inclusion classroom whilst studying, and began my formal teaching career in 2010 in various schools in the Far North. I have taught in both primary and secondary education and have been a Cairns resident since I was 6 years of age (so practically a local 😊).
I am teaching Religious Education to all year levels this year and have a secondary education background of English and History. I am committed to my Catholic faith and am really delighted to be teaching in the Religious Education space.
Outside of teaching, I love being immersed in nature and playing pickle ball. My passion is being of service in the community through volunteering. I have been involved with Cairns Choral Society for 30 years, performed at a variety of events/stage shows, have been a committee member and was a recent Producer for three stage shows at CPAC. I have also been actively involved with Cairns Coastguard and Rondo Theatre.
I look forward to meeting you all throughout the year 😊

I am committed, alongside the rest of the College community, to living out the College motto, “Heart speaks to heart,” and helping us all grow in faith, compassion, and understanding.
Having spent over 25 years working in schools across Australia—on Gimuy Walubara Yidinji land (Cairns), Darug (Sydney), Burramattagal (Parramatta), and Ngunnawal (Canberra) land—I am excited to continue my journey at Newman Catholic College. The College’s embrace of the Franciscan charism and the spirit of St. Clare, where faith and individual worldviews come together, deeply resonates with me as I begin this new year.

I'm someone who finds joy in creativity, adventure, and staying active. Growing up in Cairns, surrounded by the natural beauty of the tropics, I developed a deep appreciation for exploration and the arts. I taught primary school in Brisbane for 3 years, then decided to take my career abroad. Having spent the past couple of years living in London and teaching, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a vibrant and diverse cultural scene. The city not only deepened my love for education but also fuelled my passion for art and travel. Whether exploring galleries, discovering new destinations, or engaging in creative pursuits, I find inspiration in everywhere I travel. Beyond teaching, I am deeply passionate about fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercise plays a key role in my daily routine, including gym, running, Pilates and yoga. I am also a devoted dog lover, and nothing brings me more joy than spending time with them. Through my experiences in teaching, travel, and personal interests, I strive to bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a well-rounded perspective to everything I do.
