Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Yirrganydji and Djabugay peoples, as the traditional owners of this land and pay respect to their elders, past, present, and emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal Australia who educated their children in this area. We show respect for their history, their culture, and our shared future.
We will always remember that under the concrete, steel and asphalt of this College, this land is, was, and always will be traditional Aboriginal land.

Prayer for the month of May
In the month of May, which the Catholic Church devotes to Blessed Mary, let us pray this prayer of Saint John Henry Newman our patron:
O Mother of Jesus, and my Mother, let me dwell with you,
cling to you and love you with ever-increasing love.
I promise the honour, love and trust of a child.
Give me a mother's protection, for I need your watchful care.
You know better than any other the thoughts and desires of the Sacred Heart.
Keep constantly before my mind the same thoughts, the same desires,
that my heart may be filled with zeal for the interests of the Sacred Heart of your Divine Son. Instill in me a love of all that is noble, that I may no longer be easily turned to selfishness. Help me, dearest Mother, to acquire the virtues that God wants of me:
to forget myself always, to work solely for him, without fear of sacrifice.
I shall always rely on your help to be what Jesus wants me to be.
I am his; I am yours, my good Mother!
Give me each day your holy and maternal blessing until my last evening on earth,
when your Immaculate Heart will present me to the heart of Jesus in heaven,
there to love and bless you and your divine Son for all eternity.
Amen.
Saint John Henry Newman, Pray for us.
From the Principal

Dr Lauretta Graham
Dear Families of Newman Catholic College
I do hope the term is proceeding well for you. The College has been an exciting place for students in recent days with reef trips, Crankworxs excursions, Futsal championships, Mathematics competitions and Music Camp.
Please place the Athletics carnival in your diaries as a save the date. For the first time in our short history, it will be held within our College grounds. We look forward to having you attend. The date is: Friday 14 June. This is a compulsory attendance day for all students.
May I draw your attention to the two posters below. As a College we could do better with our students’ school attendance.
One poster speaks to lateness. Just a little bit late doesn’t seem much but … 10mins late each day amounts to 1.5 weeks of missed work for a student over the course of one year. This is not to mention the disruption for other students when the flow of the lesson stops to welcome a late student into the room. We all have a responsibility to each other to be on time. As your Principal, I ask that parents attend to this. We understand that on occasions this is unavoidable.
The second poster presents information on absenteeism. 1 or 2 days a week can really add up… If a child misses one day per week that is 8 weeks per year. Our school year consists of 39 weeks and with 8 weeks missed there is only 31 weeks left for learning. 31 as a fraction of the whole year 52 weeks is 60% of the year. 40% of time being spent out of school. This I believe is a worry. It certainly is for me. Over the course of 13 years of education that is 2.5 years of missed learning. Please insist on your children attending school.
We will be tightening up on granting approvals for families taking students out during class time for additional holidays, as well. Over the next term our Year Coordinators will invite those families in for interviews where students are not meeting our 90% rule. Absenteeism is creating additional work and hardship for our staff. We are blessed with dedicated good staff and as a community we need to be caring for them. Sports days and community days, retreats and camps are all part of our compulsory attendance days. For these times a letter needs to be written to the Learner Mentor teacher if your child happens to be absent.
Our College has a strong culture of learning and being located within a university we have an expectation that those who have accepted enrolment with us work towards being on time and in attendance.
Please contact me if you have any questions relating to these matters.
With Every Blessing
Lauretta Graham
Principal

Year 7 JCU Experience
On Thursday 9 May, Year 7 students walked to James Cook University (JCU) for a half-day experience that provided them with an inspiring look into the world of higher education. This special event, designed to spark curiosity and a passion for learning, allowed our students to explore various facets of university life and the myriad opportunities it holds. We extend our heartfelt thanks to James Cook University for hosting such an enlightening event and look forward to many more collaborative experiences in the future.

Bunnings: Project Gnomeland
Newman Catholic College recently had a classroom visit to our Year 7 Project Garden Group by a community garden expert from Bunnings on Friday 17 May. This was made even more special by Bunnings' generous donation of gloves, gardening tools, mulch, and vegetable seedlings, which have greatly enhanced our school garden project.
The visit was part of our ongoing effort to provide hands-on learning experiences and to foster a love for the environment and sustainable practices among our students. The hands-on activity not only taught them essential gardening skills but also the values of teamwork, patience, and responsibility. The generous donations from Bunnings have provided our garden group with the necessary tools and materials to sustain and expand our gardening project. The gloves and tools ensure that our students can work safely and effectively, while the mulch and seedlings are vital for the garden's growth and productivity. We extend our deepest gratitude to Bunnings for their unwavering support and generosity. Thank you for your continued support of our College programs.

Newman Catholic College Success in Fundraising for Caritas Australia's Project Compassion 2024
Over the past ten weeks, students, staff, parents, and supporters of Newman Catholic College wholeheartedly embraced the spirit of compassion in action by participating in this year's Caritas Australia's Project Compassion 2024. This annual Lenten fundraising and awareness appeal was carried out by students and staff in their Learner Mentor Groups and saw various activities to raise funds and awareness for those in need. From donations and physical challenges, to hosting events and making personal sacrifices, every contribution has made a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
We are thrilled to share that, through our collective efforts, Newman Catholic College has raised just over $3000 for Caritas. This achievement demonstrates the compassion and generosity that defines our college community and reinforces a commitment to serving others.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed and participated in this meaningful cause particularly our sponsors whose logos can be seen below. Your dedication and kindness have brought hope and support to countless individuals and communities around the world. Thank you once again for your unwavering support and generosity.

Stop Drop and Go Zone

Stop Drop Go Zone
Kinetic runs the public bus services in Cairns and they travel through the JCU bus interchange regularly throughout the day.
Drivers have reported safety issues as parents are dropping off/picking up children from Newman Catholic College.
The area around the end roundabout is marked with no standing signs however cars are often stopping in this area which impacts on the safe passage of buses.
Parents are also reminded not to queue around the roundabout when accessing the Stop Drop Go Zone.
We are kindly asking the families to use the designated Stop Drop Go Zone to ensure the public buses and other road users are not inconvenienced.

What an exciting term it has been so far!
Year 9 Extension History Students attended the Cairns Armour and Artillery Museum on Friday Week 5 to have their World War 1 learning become tangible. They explored the numerous tanks and armoured vehicles, in addition to being privileged to be able to handle weapons from the displays, and experience an armoured vehicle ride. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to get away from the classroom and engage with primary materials and displays up close and personal, rather than just in images or texts viewed in class.
Year 7 students have attended an excursion to the Reef this week, and this opportunity is a great cross-curriculum approach to learning. Students will be able to reflect on the value the Reef has to the Cairns economy and liveability factors, in addition to considering how managing the Reef is of vital importance for the Cairns region.
Finally, as the assessment period begins, it is important to note that students must attend school during these periods, particularly with classes that have exams this term. If students are absent, their absence must be explained and/or they must provide a medical certificate. The HASS classes have the following assessments coming up:
Class | Task | Draft Due Date | Final Due Date |
7HASS | Informative Essay | Week 7 | Tuesday Week 9 |
7CIV2 | Civics Poster | Wednesday Week 7 | Wednesday Week 9 |
8HIS | Exam | Thurs P5-6, Week 8
8ECBUS | Digital Campaign | Monday Week 7 | Friday Week 8 |
9HIS | Exam: Historical Essay | All lessons Week 8
9GEO | Written Investigation | Tuesday Week 8 | Friday Week 9 |

Japanese School Visit
On Friday 10 May 2024, Newman Catholic College hosted 83 Japanese students from Shizuoka Eiwa Jyogakuin High School. This visit was an electrifying whirlwind of international exchange, enriching the lives of students from both campuses. From lively morning sports activities to engaging trivia quizzes, language barriers dissolved as students enthusiastically communicated in English, Japanese, and the universal language of body gestures.
The afternoon brought about even deeper connections as Japanese students immersed themselves in our regular classes, seamlessly blending into discussions and enhancing their learning alongside our own students.
At Newman Catholic College, we are committed to nurturing this bond, ensuring that students and staff from both sides continue to benefit from diverse international exchanges and deepen their understanding of different cultures. Together, we're building bridges that span continents, connecting Australia and the rest of the world in meaningful ways.

Italian Food Excursion
On Friday 3 May, our Year 8 Italian students had a fantastic outing to Sapori Antichi Italiani, an Italian café in Campus Village. This visit was a wonderful opportunity for the students to practice their Italian language skills by ordering food in Italian. They enjoyed a delicious array of authentic Italian pastries and cakes, immersing themselves in the rich culinary traditions of Italy. The students also had a great time socializing with their classmates, making the day both educational and enjoyable. Thank you to all the families who supported this excursion. Buon appetito!

French Movie Festival
On Friday 10 May, the French students went to Cairns Central, to see a movie called Ama Gloria as part of the French Film festival. Ama Gloria is a PG story about a 5-year-old little girl named Cléo who is raised in Paris by her nanny, Gloria, a Cape Verde woman, and her dad. One day her nanny's mum died and Gloria, the nanny, is obliged to go back to her island to mourn her mum. Gloria won't return to Paris so she invites Cléo to visit her and say goodbye to her. Cléo likes the life on the island which is full of different cultural rituals and activities. At the start of her trip, Cléo is a bit jealous of Gloria's children but then, she understands that everyone has a place in the family. Each big moment of Cléo's life was illustrated by a sequence of beautifully animated drawings. At the end, Gloria offers to Cléo her precious necklace and they part ways.
Year 8 students enjoyed the movie and shared their thoughts: "J'ai aimé le film parce que l'histoire était intéressante. J'ai aussi aimé le film parce que les images étaient très belles. "
Year 7 students found the story very different from the movies they are used to watching.
The classes did a story study in French to grasp more of the content and learn some vocabulary to describe a city.
