Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Yirrganydji and Djabugay peoples, as the traditional owners of this land and pay respect to their elders, past, present, and emerging for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal Australia who educated their children in this area. We show respect for their history, their culture, and our shared future.
We will always remember that under the concrete, steel and asphalt of this College, this land is, was, and always will be traditional Aboriginal land.

Prayer
God of wisdom and might,
we praise you for the wonder of our being,
for mind, body and spirit.
Be with the students and staff of our college as they begin
a new school year.
Bless them, their families, and all in our community.
Give our young people strength and grace as their bodies grow;
wisdom and knowledge to their minds
as they search for understanding;
and peace and zeal to their hearts.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Dr Lauretta Graham
Principal
Dear Families of Newman Catholic College
Welcome to the new academic year.
The new academic year commenced last week, and we were thrilled to welcome our new staff and students.
We are especially conscious of those young people beginning their secondary education for the first time. We are excited for them and look forward to being part of their next phase of learning.
As people of faith, the beginning of this year is the perfect opportunity to look again at our own journey of faith and the example we, as educators in the Newman tradition, can offer our students and staff. During Week 0 the staff at our College revisited what it was to be at Newman College and what makes us stand out, what makes us unique, and what we are called to do in this place.
Our first Catholic Identity task has always been to build an effective staff team to lead this new school development. A team of diverse, strong faith-filled, and capable people to share this mysterious and magical faith journey. These amazing people are our pioneers who will pave the way for many to come. Newman Catholic College will continue to be built on their shoulders through hard work, dedication, and their creative spirit inspired by the Holy Spirit and founded on the Gospels of Jesus Christ.
Much that will emerge in this place will be due to our team’s faith in God. Each day they will acknowledge our God sending miracles, inspirations, and teaching, and they will learn to expect and notice them and weave these inspirations into their creation.
Like Saint John Henry Newman our foundation staff will see God’s guiding light showing them things that can be seen only in the darkness; seeing through the unknowns of life, the challenges of a new school, and calling them to trust the unseen presence of God in these moments. Then, in turn, their faith will serve as a beacon to light the way for other pilgrims on the way in the future.
Here, everyone, is a leader, and these people will take responsibility for creating the conditions through which God’s purposes can be fulfilled. They must not be passive but active... One of the most important points of leadership is that large promises become real through small beginnings. Leaders begin with an envisioned future, but they also know that there is a long journey between here and there and we can only reach it one act at a time, one day at a time, with everybody’s support. Everything about leadership at some point boils down to work.
John Henry Newman found ways to live his faith in his time and place. At our college, we are called to do the same. We are called to rebuild the church today, encouraging everyone to live the Gospel life, more by deed than by word.
On behalf of the staff, I wish you every blessing for the new year. We are here to share in the life and education of your sons and daughters.
With kindest regards
Lauretta Graham
Principal
In the words of Pope Francis
"Teachers have an extraordinary responsibility. A recent Vatican document describes teaching as one of humanity's 'most excellent and creative activities'. The personal relationship between teacher and student is neither simply utilitarian nor even just professional. There is a spiritual dimension to this relationship that aids the human fomation of the student far beyond the subject matter at hand"

Deputy Principal - Academic Studies

Mr Wilbur Donovan
Deputy Principal
As we embark on the commencement of another academic year at Newman Catholic College, I extend a warm welcome to our new and returning families. For the new families to NCC, welcome to our community!
A distinctive feature of our College is the diverse range of elective subjects offered to our students. This year, we have introduced a new process for students wishing to change elective subjects. This ensures that all necessary approvals, including parental consent, are obtained. We believe this process will enhance the overall experience for both students and their families. Students can collect these forms from the library, or parents can access them in the parent portal. Changes to core subjects will occur based on negotiation between all stakeholders and led by the year coordinator.
There are changes to how Project Based Learning [PBL] is integrated within our curriculum this year. Year 7 students will still keep the Friday afternoon double that was intended to be a time where students learn how to conduct a project. In years 8 and 9, PBL is interspersed within the elective subjects and the core subjects where possible. The elective subjects in those year levels now run for a full semester, allowing the teacher to teach content, core skills and basic processes in the first term, and then run a project in the second term to consolidate learning from the first. This ensures that the electives remain as practical as possible with real contexts for students to understand what they are learning, why they are learning it and how it interconnects with other subject areas.
We also now have a set policy on assessment submissions. This will be sent out within the next few days, however I do note that many of the Learner Mentors will have already made contact regarding this. Please remember that the learner mentors and year coordinators are there to support your child pastorally, so please refer to them in the first instance with any questions or concerns that may arise.
As always, we appreciate the ongoing support from our dedicated parents, and we look forward to working collaboratively to ensure the best possible educational experience for our students.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our various College functions in the coming months.
NEW MyCE Parent Mobile App

Some of the most useful features include:
- school contact and directory information
- notification of student absences

- student timetables
- access to your students’ academic reports
- the ability to add school calendar events to your personal calendar

Science Update 2024
Year 7 Science:
This term the focus for Year 7 Science will be building scientific inquiry skills. Students have started by learning about lab safety, ethics and specialised equipment. They will be putting this knowledge to use as early as week 3 when they participate in an Elephant’s Toothpaste experiment.
Over the coming weeks they will learn how to use all of their senses to make observations and draw inferences. Throughout the term they will progress through all elements of the scientific method, from identifying variables right through to analysing data and communicating findings. We aim to include as many exciting activities as we can to inspire curiosity amongst our students and set a strong foundation for future scientific knowledge and skills.
Year 8 Science:
Our Year 8 Earth Science unit this term has gotten off to a ‘rocky start’. Professor Michael Bird from the Geology department at James Cook University has provided us with some rock kits and other various resources to ensure our lessons totally ‘rock’. Students are currently exploring the properties of the 3 main groups of rocks: Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Our first of many lab activities for the year will see students investigating the effect of cooling time on the size of crystals formed from a solution.
After developing a ‘crystal clear’ understanding of the rock cycle, students will then learn about tectonic theory and how various landforms are the result of geological processes.
Year 9 Science:
Moving up to Year 9 could be a ‘nerve-wracking’ experience for our students as they kick off the term by studying the nervous and endocrine systems. We will learn how the body can maintain a stable internal environment using both electrical and chemical messages. As always, we like to engage students in ‘Science by doing’ so we have many exciting practical lessons planned, included dissecting a sheep’s brain to learn more about the central nervous system.
Electives:
We are excited to announce that we now have 3 electives on offer for students who can't get enough of science. Our Marine Science elective is perfect for any students who love the ocean and want to dive deeper into the wonderful world of Marine Biology and Ecology. For those with a fascination of how the amazing human body functions to keep us alive every day, we have the health science elective. Our new addition this year is the earth and environmental elective in Year 9 and the unit is well timed as students will be learning about the causes and effects of natural disasters.
All three of these elective subjects will provide students with opportunities to work alongside scientific experts in their field, both over at James Cook University and out in the field. At Newman Catholic College our science education extends well beyond the four walls of the classroom and aims to help students build the experience and skills they need to continue on to tertiary studies in their area of interest.

Counsellor Corner

Ms Gemma Paisley
College Counsellor
I am happy to introduce myself to the new families of Newman Catholic College as the College Counsellor. I grew up on Gubbi Gubbi country in Southeast Queensland and moved to Cairns in 2013. I am a Social Worker, with lots of experience working with children, their families, and communities.
The College counselling service is a short-term school-based support service, supporting students in their psychological, academic, and social development. It is a time-limited service and should not substitute the continuing of long-term external support.
You will see me around the College 5 days a week. Parents can refer their child to the College Counsellor by contacting the Learner Mentor Teacher, or alternatively students are able to self-refer via the Student Portal.
Warm regards,
Ms Gemma Paisley
Counsellor
